The H.J. HEINZ Company began a tomato breeding program in 1936 at Bowling Green, Ohio, to improve yield and disease resistance. The program has been continuous since that time and has focused mainly on processing tomatoes adapted to the many countries where Heinz processes tomatoes.

The commercial success of Heinz hybrids propelled Heinz into the industry seed trade in 1992. Heinz hybrids had established a reputation with growers for reliable high tonnage, firmness and high color with high viscosity.

This reputation was confirmed by the industry, and by 1995, HeinzSeed had become the market share leader for processing tomato seed in North America. HeinzSeed also has major markets in South America and the Mediterranean region.

HeinzSeed benefits from a strong applied breeding program with breeding stations in:

Superior hybrids are created by classical breeding techniques and intense selection in many environments.
